The Rocky Mountains –or, the Rockies- are the largest mountain range in North America. They’re about 4,800 kilometres long from their northernmost part in western Canada to New Mexico in the southwestern United States, and about 650 kilometres in width. The Rockies formed about 80 to 55 million years ago when a number of plates began to slide underneath the North American plate. Humans began living in the mountain range at the end of the last ice age. The thirty highest peaks are located in the state of Colorado.
The Rockies were home to some Native American tribes, such as the Apache, the Cheyenne or the Sioux. Today, not many people live in the Rockies anymore, but there is lots of wildlife! With a little bit of luck, you can see wolves, bighorn sheep, cougars, black bears or moose in one of the many national parks. Are you ready for an adventure?
