It's a sunny morning in London, and Patrick from Germany is having breakfast with the Taylors. He sits down at the table and looks at all the food. There are eggs, bacon, toast, ham and something he doesn't know – baked beans?!
"Good morning, Patrick!" says Mrs. Taylor. "Would you like some tea or coffee?"
Patrick smiles and answers, "Tea, please." He tries to understand the food on the table. He is used to bread rolls with butter or jam in the morning, or a bowl of cereals, but this is very different.
Mr. Taylor, Tommy's dad, offers him some baked beans. "Do you want to try these, Max? They're a British breakfast tradition!"
Max looks at the beans and says, "In Germany, we don’t eat beans for breakfast. I don't know if I can eat them." He is a little nervous but decides to try them. When he tastes them, he says, "Hmm, they are surprisingly sweet! I didn't expect that. I don't really like them, though. I mean, they're not bad, but very different."
His cousin Tommy laughs. "You should try some mushrooms too! We eat them with eggs a lot here."
Patrick looks at the mushrooms suspiciously and shakes his head. "Mushrooms for breakfast? That's too strange for me!" "C'mon, Patrick," Tommy says, "You know the saying: When in Rome, do as the Romans do." Patrick is confused. "But we're in London?" Now everyone at the table is laughing, except for Patrick who doesn't know what to say.
