  • Diary of Isaac Allerton, a passenger on the Mayflower - Part I
    6 September 1620 – Plymouth
At last, the day has come. This morning my wife, son and daughters and I left Plymouth on the ship called the Mayflower. As the ship slowly moved away from the harbour, I stood on deck and watched England disappear behind us. Although I am excited about our new life, I also feel afraid. On the one hand, I hope for freedom and better opportunities; on the other hand, I know the journey will be long and dangerous. Nevertheless, I trust that God will guide us safely.
    20 September 1620 – Life at Sea
After only two weeks, life on board already feels endless. Because the weather has been rough, we must stay below deck most of the time. As a result, the air is thick and unpleasant. Moreover, there is very little light, so the days and nights seem the same. Not only is it crowded, but it is also cold and damp.
In addition, many passengers are seasick. Whenever the ship moves from side to side, children cry and adults pray. Furthermore, our food is poor. We eat hard biscuits, salted meat, and sometimes cheese. Unfortunately, the biscuits often contain worms, so we must clean them before eating. Instead of fresh water, we now drink weak beer, because it stays good longer.
    5 October 1620 – The Storm
Last night, however, was the worst of all. Suddenly, a terrible storm began. The wind howled, and huge waves crashed against the ship. For hours, we were thrown from side to side. At one moment, a loud crack filled the air — one of the ship’s main beams had broken. Immediately, fear spread among us. While some people cried, others prayed loudly. Meanwhile, the sailors worked bravely to repair the damage. In the end, the ship survived. Although we were exhausted, we were also thankful.
