Aufgabe 1 von 1 in Level 2
  • Understanding an article: Billy the kid
  • Billy the Kid, whose real name was Henry McCarty (also known as William H. Bonney), is one of the most famous outlaws in the history of the American Wild West. He was born in 1859, probably in New York City, although historians are not completely sure about the exact place. His life was short and violent, but it became the subject of many legends, books, and movies.
When Billy was still a child, his father died, and his mother moved west with her two sons, hoping to find a better life. They lived in different towns before settling in New Mexico. After his mother died of tuberculosis in 1874, Billy was left alone at the age of 14. Without family support and with very little money, he soon began to get into trouble. He was first arrested for stealing food and clothes, but he escaped from jail. Witnesses later reported that he had escaped through a window. This was the beginning of his life as a fugitive.
Billy the Kid became involved in a violent conflict known as the Lincoln County War. This was a fight between two business groups competing for power and control in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Billy joined one side, called “The Regulators,” and took part in several gunfights. During this period, he killed a number of men. Some people believed he was a cold-blooded criminal. Others thought he was defending his friends and acting out of loyalty.
Billy was known for being friendly and polite in everyday life. Many people described him as charming and intelligent. Many people say that he could speak Spanish fluently, which helped him make friends among the local Hispanic population in New Mexico. However, he was also skilled with guns and was not afraid to use them when he felt threatened.
In 1881, Billy was captured by Sheriff Pat Garrett, who had once been his friend. Billy was sentenced to death, but he managed to escape from jail once again, killing two deputies in the process. His freedom did not last long. A few months later, Pat Garrett tracked him down and shot him at Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Billy the Kid was only 21 years old when he died.
Even today, Billy the Kid remains a symbol of the Wild West. His life shows how difficult and dangerous life on the American frontier could be. Although he was a criminal, his story continues to fascinate people around the world.
